In the first session of our retreat we talked about some methods of how to be still. We learned that stillness requires us to stop; to cease our efforts to try and control our circumstances and surrender in trust to God. Secondly we discussed the need to look at God’s faithfulness, His work in our lives. Often times we are left restless because we make rest about ourselves and our accomplishments. Finally, as we practice stillness, we are to wait and listen for the Lord. For it is when every distraction and striving ceases that we can better listen to the voice of our good shepherd.

In the second session of our retreat we discussed the primary deterrent to our rest—our sin. We discussed how sin weighs us down in the race that we are called to run. Along with this, the guilt and shame that is associated with sin often leaves us weary and traps us in a cycle of “sin-confess”. From this session, we were tasked to recognize sin in our lives; often times we can grow apathetic towards sin or be in denial. Along with this, we discussed genuine repentance and were reminded of the forgiveness we have at the cross of Jesus Christ.

In the final session of our retreat we discussed the source of our rest—Jesus Christ. We examined why in Him we can find a rest not comparable to anything else in the world. We saw how Christ’s teachings is not laborious and declares that He has done the work. We learned how in contrast to other teachers, Jesus tender and compassionate; He addresses us with grace and truth, able to sympathize with our struggles. Finally, we can rest in Jesus because He is triumphant; Jesus has overcome the world! If we are in Christ, we can have true rest. No Christ, no rest—but Know Christ, know rest.
