While Yemen has been plagued by conflict for decades, the current situation is one that has become one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. In March 2015, the internal conflict has escalated, and since then, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), has estimated that more than 3 million Yemenis have fled their homes and 280,000 have sought asylum in other countries1. Since the armed conflict has begun, approximately 6,872 civilians have been killed and 10,768 have been wounded.2 However, the actual civilian casualty count may be even higher. As a result of the ongoing feud between Houthi insurgents and the government, the UN reports that approximately 14 million people will remain at risk of starvation and death if they remain unable to get access to healthcare and food aid.
The Bible calls us to be the light of the world, and to serve as witnesses to the world about God’s love that is evident in our lives. In Matthew 5:16, it says “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Let us remember that the reason we are called to help our brothers and sisters is to point them back to our Father, and remind them of the God who loves them, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.

Most of us are not consumed with worry about access to healthcare and food. However, the citizens of Yemen are faced with this reality every day. Many families are not able to afford food for themselves, and due to the crumbling infrastructure as the result of war, any aid in the form of food and medical supplies are not making it to the people who need it the most. While there are obstacles, various charities remain committed to getting the Yemenis the relief they need. If you’re interested in learning more, or would like to support this cause, please see a breakdown of charities that you can contribute to.
