In this standalone sermon we looked at Luke 10 and the example of Martha and Mary to learn the wrong attitudes for serving. We learned that this passage was not about the right action to take, but the right attitude to have. We saw how Martha had abandoned her reason for the responsibilities that she had; the call for believers is to recall to mind that we serve because the love of Christ controls us. We were also reminded that if we are serving for the sake of recognition while rebuking our neighbor, we fall in line with the wrong attitude of Martha. In addition to this, if we seek results over maintaining reverence for the Lord, as well intended our intentions may be, we fall short. Finally, if our requirements to accomplish the task is greater than our desire to give relief to our neighbor, we have fallen short of a true heart of service. We are called to serve one another in love; this requires that we cultivate a right attitude in our hearts and not simply seek to finish the task. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10)
